Renderings VS. Photography
Why use rendering vs. photography? most people might ask. There are many reasons! Rendering is faster and more cost effective, and the completed product offers a flawless image that can be easily previewed or edited according to specific preferences. Since rendering has evolved so much over the years, it is becoming harder to discern a photograph from a rendered image anyway, so it is as if they are the same thing! Since building a scale model takes time and materials, money would be lost and it would take longer to preview the finished product. Rendering is the way to go!
A product is better suited to photorealistic rendering when your project matches these criteria:
• Need to visualize physically impossible situations such as internal components or cutaway views
• The product has not yet been manufactured
• Want to include many combinations of different backgrounds, material colors, textures, scenes, etc
• Product is metal, plastic, rubber, or wood
A product is better suited to product photography when your project matches these criteria:
• Product geometry is very complex (lots of 3D contours, etc that would be time-intensive to model)
• The required views, materials, colors, etc have already been defined
• Product contains lots of fabrics or textiles
• Product has already been manufactured
